Georgia's Shame: Electing Saxby Chambliss

Operating in an age where television was relatively new and had not reached the point of political advertising dominance it now holds, Nixon's operatives used phone calls along with the candidate's slimy proclamations defining who was patriotic, namely himself, and who was not, his opponents.
Nixon maintained a close working relationship with Joe McCarthy up until the time when the Wisconsin demagogue got into trouble, at which time he abandoned him, typical of "Tricky Dick's" swivel-hipped action of opportunism during moments of potential crisis. After all, at the top of the parade for shutting off McCarthy's water was then Vice President Nixon's boss, President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Chambliss on Tuesday could be said to have been elected rather than re-elected since that 2002 result remains questionable, as does the result of the Georgia's gubernatorial election.
In the current race, however, the results were clear and Georgians who selected Chambliss for another six year term have plenty to be ashamed about. Here is a candidate who demonstrates why so many Americans denounce the current political system.
Chambliss was selected by Karl Rove to run for the Senate in 2002 since his record as a House member identified him as a type of thoroughly amenable sheep that the political world's Doctor Cyclops finds endearing.
Rove was no doubt filled with nostalgia over the fact that Chambliss hailed from the same state as Newt Gingrich, the self-acknowledged political moralist and frequent marital philanderer who led the charge to throw Bill Clinton out of the presidency for failing to disclose a philandering episode in a civil affidavit, the kind of act that certainly generates calamity both foreign and domestic.
Chambliss, aided by Rove, thought of a way to turn a political hero who had lost three limbs serving his country, Senator Max Cleland, into a deserter of the American cause. Cleland was attacked in television ads showing him alongside Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden since he had allegedly weakened America by opposing the creation of a Homeland Security Department.
It was never mentioned that George Bush's initial instinct was to oppose the creation of that very department. Cleland had supported the department creation element of the legislation from the beginning. His sole opposition was Republican insistence that workers in that department would not receive the same benefits and protections as federal government employees otherwise received.
Why do you think the exception was imposed in the first place relative to Homeland Security? So Rove would have a "disloyalty" issue to wave over the heads of Cleland and others.
In the current campaign Chambliss was sounding the note of "checks and balances" in the name of preserving American government. The translation was that they had lost the presidency in November as well as control of the House and Senate.
Television ads displayed the faces of the usual suspects such as Reid and Pelosi, along with another face. Chambliss ads revealed the face of Keith Olbermann as someone dangerously threatening the slender thread by which America's government rests. How much power is Olbermann brokering at MSNBC? Perhaps a lot if one listens to the ranting of O'Reilly.
The mainstream media has done a great job of informing us about the sagacious political figure who assisted Chambliss in his victory. A media hungry to start the 2012 presidential race before Obama has been inaugurated has pointed to Sarah Palin's appearances in Georgia actively campaigning for Chambliss as a catalyst in the Republican success.
The same Alaska governor who could not tell Katie Couric the name of one newspaper or magazine she regularly reads held court for a proud and smiling Chambliss and other enthralled audience members by lecturing on the Constitution's checks and balances. As an American mother she indicated concern over what might happen if even one more Senate seat fell into Democratic hands.
The media hungry candidate who questioned Obama's patriotism during the recently concluded presidential campaign would figure to campaign for Chambliss, especially with so many cameras running.
It was sad that Obama did not fly to Georgia to campaign against Karl Rove's trained demagogue. Bill Clinton is to be credited with traveling to Georgia and campaigning for Chambliss' opponent Jim Martin.
