Political Cortex: Brain Food for the Body Politic

In his classic defense of Christianity, Orthodoxy, G. K. Chesterton wrote:

When a religious scheme is shattered (as Christianity was shattered at the Reformation), it is not merely the vices that are let loose. The vices are, indeed, let loose, and they wander and do damage. But the virtues are let loose also; and the virtues wander more wildly, and the virtues do more terrible damage. The modern world is full of the old Christian virtues gone mad. [1]  

With the shattering of the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, a titanic earthquake ripped through the United States and quickly swept across the world. Two shock waves of anger and patriotism predictably met at a point on the globe opposite the United States: the Middle East. Osama bin Laden and his evil cohorts were identified as the enemies, and they were in for a shakedown by the glorious US military. The terrorists of 9/11 declared war on the US, and war is what they got. In this cosmic battle against religiously inspired terrorists, America wages war on the side of good and the terrorists fight on the side of evil. Americans have been wakened from their postmodern, anything-goes slumber to the reality that, like it or not, the United States has a mission to save the world from evil. How much clearer could it get?

In fact, things could get a lot clearer. We Americans overwhelmingly supported the "War on Terrorism" after 9/11 because the terrorist attacks filled us with unprecedented fear, a desire for retribution, and a deep desire for security from further attacks at all cost. The blatantly evil nature of 9/11 impacted us so severely and inflamed our righteous indignation so quickly that we were convinced that a "War on Terrorism" was the only possible course of action. Furthermore, we were convinced that whatsoever actions taken by the US against its terrorist enemies were automatically justified. We even went so far as to declare that America had a moral obligation to do everything in its power to wipe terrorism itself from the earth.

In the horrible afterglow of 9/11, these notions seemed to be the truth; they appeared wise, logical, reasonable, practical, and morally sound. Little did we know that these convictions were deliberately shaped by--and played right into the hands of--less detectable, more cunning and more perilous enemies of the United States, many of whom appear to be most loyal friends of our country and who unceasingly trumpet its most noble and cherished ideals.

Error is often more plausible than truth, and the two most insidious forms of error to rear their ugly heads after 9/11 can be called neoconservatism and radical Zionism. One of the neoconservatives' and radical Zionists' favorite non sequitur and bandwagon fallacies is, "If you love your country, you will support the 'War on Terrorism.'" Whereas they pose as great champions of "freedom", American-style "democracy" and "economic liberalization", the twin ideologies of neoconservatism and radical Zionism lurking underneath the "War on Terrorism" are in reality attempting to lull the human race asleep, ignorant of their threat.

Let us walk step by step through the neoconservative and radical Zionist grand master plan to attain worldwide domination. This scheme was actually inaugurated prior to 9/11 with the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1994 and the Project for the New American Century's (PNAC's) charter document, Rebuilding America's Homeland Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources for a New Century, which was published in 1997. NAFTA permitted American big businesses to vastly increase their size and wealth through the exploitation of Mexican workers, while the PNAC charter spelled out the basic requirements for American global supremacy cloaked in the language of freedom and moral values. These first steps were directed primarily at investors and politicians rather than the public at large.

A third stage in this scheme was the Y2K computer scare of the late 1990s. With hindsight this fear can be seen as baseless and ridiculous, but at the time it was taken seriously by tens of millions of people. The false Y2K crisis was a deft prep for future events; it began training Americans to grow accustomed to anxiety in the third millennium.

A fourth and pivotal stage in the neocon-Zionist extremist conspiracy was 9/11 itself. That shocking event galvanized the American people for the "War on Terrorism." Without 9/11, the "War on Terrorism" would not have begun and the executive branch of government would not have swollen beyond its domestic legal limits. And without massive sales of arms and oil for the "War on Terrorism," America's mega-corporate tycoons could not rack up such huge profits.

A fifth step was the war in Afghanistan, which was ostensibly waged to capture Osama bin Laden and dismantle the center of operations for al-Qaeda terrorists. The real purposes of the war, which become clear upon looking at a map, were first to construct petroleum pipelines from Pakistan across the country to the oil deposits of Central Asia, and second to place US forces in the strategic vicinity of Pakistan to help preserve our dictatorial ally, Pervez Musharraf, in power.

A sixth and particularly crucial step in the master plan was to portray Saddam Hussein as a wicked monster in order to justify an illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Certain neocons and Zionist fanatics devised the pretext that Hussein harbored weapons of mass destruction and was resuming productions of WMDs, even going so far as to forge a uranium contract between Iraq and Niger, to generate public support for war in order to plunder that country's vast oil reserves. Five years after invading Iraq, the number of American troops stationed there is about the same, yet little progress toward stability and none at all toward prosperity has been made, with insurgent violence and guerrilla conflict reminiscent of the Vietnam War. As the struggle drags on, the neocons' and Zionist fundamentalists' psychological goal is to get Americans used to perpetual war.

A seventh tactic in the dark war against the world has been to spark recurring incidents of "Muslim" terrorist violence around the globe. In June 2005, a Koran was supposedly flushed down a toilet in the Guantanamo Bay prison camp; in February 2006, Danish cartoons mocking the Prophet Mohammed appeared in six European newspapers; and in September 2006, a speech by Pope Benedict XVI at Regensburg University about faith and reason was twisted into an attack on the Islamic religion. All three events aroused small, scattered but violent demonstrations in Eurasia which garnered wide media attention. The point of these well-timed deliberate provocations has been to keep Americans fearful of the threat of "Islamic" terrorism, as well as of Islam and Muslims in general, to warm us up for the next major war against a Muslim country.

Finally, an eighth stage in the neoconservative and radical Zionist plot, which was just alluded to, is an invasion of Iran. Despite the fact that we Americans have been obviously deceived time and time again in the past eleven years, most of us are still completely swallowing the idea that this Persian Gulf country is a growing threat to their national security. Yet simultaneously, at least two-thirds of Americans also oppose launching any war against Iran. It is probably partly due to this strong antiwar sentiment, as well as to embarrassing US and UN reports about the lack of a WMD project, that a US-led attack has not already taken place. After Saudi Arabia, Iran is the second most oil-rich nation in the Middle East and also one of the most populous, incessantly coveted by American petroleum lords. Their worst nightmare would be for Iranians to actually succeed in building a peaceful nationwide nuclear energy program, consigning a majority of Iranian proven oil reserves to disuse.  

An adroit confusion of truth with ideology is the distinctive hallmark of neoconservatism and radical Zionism. Because of this confusion and the persistence with which neocons and Zionist extremists tell elaborate lies, ideology threatens to replace truth in the minds of many Americans (and has indeed already replaced it in the minds of some). Only when we recognize the existence of a certain evil can we then take steps to confront that evil. Once the people of the United States recognize the neoconservative and radical Zionist plot against God's law and humanity, they will have a chance to confront it.

In order to combat this confusion, which is spreading like wildfire in the twenty-first century, we must remember that the tens of millions of peaceful human beings across the Middle East and the Muslim world who hold anti-Western sentiments are not enemies of the United States and should not be regarded as such.

We must also remember that evil is not the exclusive property of terrorists and their sympathizers, just as good is not the exclusive property of America. Any political movement that claims to possess all goodness, righteousness and patriotism yet uses tactics such as chicanery, corruption and offensive war to enforce its views on the world should be vehemently opposed. Such a movement is the work of the Devil, the Antichrist, "a liar and a murderer from the beginning," who pursues his evil aims by camouflaging them as good and desirable.

While religion has brought the greatest good to humankind, it is all too true that, as Chesterton pointed out, abuse of religion has brought the greatest evils. Today the three great monotheistic religions are being abused for different reasons. Judaism is being exploited by a perverse ideology of unlimited economic gain, military conquest and political power. Christianity is being twisted by American fundamentalists in support of radical Zionism. And Islam is being distorted to justify attacks on innocent Westerners by a handful of Arabs desperate for the resolution of pressing grievances in their societies.

The radical ideologies of neoconservatism and rebel Zionism aim to divide and conquer the world by first dividing and conquering the American people. Therefore, since 9/11 a bitter political dichotomy has impaired public discourse and undermined bipartisanship in the US. By continuing the Iraq war on the false pretext of national security in opposition to the will of American citizens, neocons and radical Zionists solidify their own position and increasingly radicalize old-fashioned Republican, Democratic and independent Americans. They then use the increasing radicalization of the latter groups to their advantage by accusing them of hatred, sympathy for terrorist crimes, and lack of patriotism, and flaunt these excuses to deny them their rightful place at the table. Champions of the "War on Terrorism" have bribed both Republican and Democratic politicians in order to tighten the grip of the two-party system on our government and ensure the success of their agenda. One need only think of influential Democratic senators such as Joseph Lieberman, [2] Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi and their general compliant support for the Bush administration's foreign policy to prove that neocons and Zionist fundamentalists have bought our government.

In practically every way, the "War on Terrorism" and its twin underpinning ideologies are diametrically opposed to Christianity and to the moral law. The most powerful nation on earth--with the help of its discredited ally Israel--has launched a fierce yet subtle, neatly disguised attack on Christianity in general and the Catholic Church in particular. More than ever before, we Americans need to respond by recalling that we are part of a Christian country, and working to preserve that heritage.

With the initial post-9/11 wave of popular support on which affluent neocons and Zionist revolutionaries rode to power, their massive military buildup, their invasion of a foreign country and plans to invade another, their disregard for international law, and their inextinguishable intolerance of dissent, it is difficult to avoid the impression that the United States has begun to go the way of Nazi Germany.

The crimes of September 11, 2001 did not radically change the world as neocons and Zionist extremists assert. Old doctrines, time-tested policies and the tenets of God's Law still apply in an era dominated by the threat of catastrophic terrorist attacks. Indeed, the larger scale and persistence of twenty-first century terrorism bears eloquent testimony to the fact that we have trampled on those doctrines, policies and tenets, especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall opened new worldwide economic opportunities in 1989.

The neoconservative and revolutionary Zionist ideologies have proven severely divisive in the United States and the world, as is their purpose. They have divided Republicans and Democrats, rich countries and poor countries, rich people and poor people, the US and foreign countries and have pitted Christians against Christians, Jews against Jews, Muslims against Muslims, Arabs against Arabs, and Iraqis against Iraqis.  

By contrast, truth is the great unifying force that ultimately brings people together and fosters peace. Truth is not as simple or monochromatic as neocons and Zionist extremists portray it, however. The world is a complex and diverse place. A proper respect for truth takes that complexity into account while upholding the validity of the moral law for everyone. Only universal respect for the law of God, international law and human rights can really unite the world.

Chesterton astutely realized that virtue run amuck can be a more dangerous enemy to humanity than vice. Following the September 11 tragedy, America unsuspectingly went mad on the virtue of patriotism. In the year 2008, a few well-meaning Americans still believe that the "War on Terrorism" is a noble battle worth fighting. The trouble is that no evil, including terrorism, can be eradicated by force of human weapons, however powerful. The truly effective answers to evil are prayer, fasting and conversion of heart, practiced one person at a time. In order to properly fight evil in the world, we must first ensure that our personal relationship with God is in order.

It seems appropriate to conclude this discussion with a widely echoed remark of Fredrich August von Hayek, winner of the 1974 Nobel Prize in economic sciences: "It is indeed probable that more harm and misery have been caused by men determined to stamp out evil than by men intent on doing evil."
