Answers to Sean Hannity, No. 24

Mr. Hannity: "We would be foolish to assume there is any quick fix, any single solution, to the challenges America will face in the continuing battle with our terrorist foes. But keep in mind that the Cold War was a marathon as well, lasting some fifty years." (p. 276)
My response: The "War on Terrorism" is doomed to last forever because it based on a fallacy--the fallacy responded to in previous Numbers, which says that terrorists are enemy combatants engaged in a war against us and that consequently we can inflict on them a military defeat. Terrorists will likely continue to proliferate as long as the grievances of their societies are not addressed. Hannity is right that there is no quick fix or single solution to the challenges posed by the "War on Terrorism". But at least the Cold War was a real struggle against a military adversary, and we did obtain a clear military victory. No such triumph is in store for the current foreign policy. It continues in a downward spiral of ever more terrorist violence and ever more military retaliation. The "Muslim" terrorist criminals may and should give up their senseless murder of innocent people, but they will not and should not give up their causes, because those causes are just. If our foreign policy continues in the direction it has taken since 2001, it is safe to predict that the Middle East will not even last fifty years.
