What Exactly is John McCain Talking About? Email Print

At a TV press conference on who he plans to appeal to for votes in his presidential campaign, John McCain beamed a big smile.

McCain exclaimed that Reagan voters could support him, inferring that he would follow Reagan's policies, no doubt lock step in the tradition of the Reagan Republican mantra, "Get the government off people's backs!"

He studiously avoided any mention of George W. Bush, whose latest NBC Poll approval rating stands at 25 percent.

Bush followed the Reagan policy of "getting the government off people's backs" to the letter when it came to beef inspection.  Less than 1 percent of U.S. cows are currently inspected.

When health organizations demanded much more inspection and Japan refused to accept U.S. beef imports due to fears of an e-coli outbreak, the Bush administration balked, insisting that the present 1 percent inspection figure was satisfactory, not wanting to cut into meat industry profits.

As soaring gas prices create economic havoc, as speculators rule the scene, the Reagan Republican mantra of "Get the government off people's backs!" continues to reign.

Car manufacturers have seen sales fall 29 percent.

Many truckers have gone out of business.

United Airlines has eliminated flights to smaller cities, laying off 5,000 employees.

Meanwhile Bush takes off for a European round of major cities, winding down his disastrous period in office with a holiday most American cannot consider with the U.S. dollar's value demolished and the stock market's 400-point crash on Friday, May 30.

As for Reagan's balancing the budget, as McCain says he wants to do, Reagan tripled the national debt.

When Bush entered his White House residence there was a big Democratic budget surplus.  As Bush leaves office, the U.S. taxpayers are confronted with the biggest national debt - skyrocketing to almost $10 trillion.

No wonder that McCain will not bring up Bush.  But Reagan tripled the national debt.

Knock off trying to follow the Reagan trail, which, lest we forget, also included the Iran-Contra scandal.
