Gorbachev Sets the Record Straight! Email Print

In a Seattle Time August 24 Letter to the Editors Donna Quilter of Issaquah wrote the following:

"Thank you for publishing the Mikhail Gorbachev column clarifying at last the situation that the mainstream media has so muddled (Thursday).  It is not the Russian bear pouncing on poor little Georgia without cause, as our neocon administration and John McCain would like us to believe.  It was a calculated attack by Georgia against South Ossetia, which wants to remain an independent state backed by Russia.  Much of the fighting seems to have been done by the Ossetians against the Georgians, their ancient enemy.

"The militarization of Georgia by the U.S. and its push to admit that country and other border states to NATO, despite promises not to do so, surely fed this conflict.  And the jingoistic statements of the president and John McCain, repeated over and over by an unquestioning media, remind me of the lead-up to the Iraq war, with intelligence on the subject in letters to the editor.  But where is the news analysis, the background, we so need?  We should not have to look to the opinion page for that."

Condoleezza Rice is chasing around the world as fast as the jets can speed her.  Rice is trying desperately to make political commitments in Czechoslovakia, Poland and Iraq that will expand the horrifying rule of the Bush regime long after it has left office.

In the August 21 Seattle Times a story from its news service bore the revealing headline of RICE:  MISSILES TO STAY PUT with a subhead stating, RICE PREDICTS FUTURE PRESIDENTS WILL NEVER VOID PACT.

The story out of Warsaw revealed:

"U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed a missile defense deal with Poland on Wednesday and predicted that future presidents would never undo the controversial anti-missile program."

Rice declare "that although the pact could be legally voided by a future White House, she believes that it now has a rationale and a diplomatic momentum that makes that unlikely."

A later paragraph stated, "Some Democrats in Congress, however, want to put the brakes on the project, for which Boeing is a prime contractor, saying it has not been adequately tested."

Boeing employees celebrated the Warsaw deal Rice consummated with the Polish government.  This compete the agenda of Republicans surrounding Russia with so-called "missile defense systems".  Thinking of short-term economic aspects of this political agenda ringing Russia with conveniently labeled so-called "defense systems".

Playing games, provoking a mighty nuclear power -- namely Russia -- is a dangerously foolish game.  Remember when Russia was arming Cuba, placing the U.S. on a nuclear precipice until cooler heads prevailed?

Only idiots or fools would instigate a new arms race when nuclear power is involved.  As soon as Rice's political mischief making, which she naturally considers triumphant politi8cal diplomacy, was finished in Warsaw,  she was hastily sped off to Baghdad.

Poland has been an ally of Afghanistan and Iraq.  However, not all of the Polish people like this so-called "missile defense system" being placed on Russia's borders.

Could it be that some political extremists or war machine fanatics and big armaament business lions are backing what could be considered war provocation?

Some thoughtful Polish citizens aren't delighted with Condoleezza Rice's latest political deal with Warsaw.

In the same Seattle Times article it was further stated:

"Aina Kesek, an 82-year-old retired office clerk who lived through World War II, when Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union divided Poland between them, and then experienced four decades of Moswcow-dominated communist rule, said the Patriot missiles were a 'kind of provocation' toward Russia.

"Republicans in Congress intend to use the recent events in the region to push for an immediate start of construction.

"It is going to be easier to make our case on Capitol Hill now'", said Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., a proponent of the program.

"Democratic Rep. Ellen Tauscher, who leads a key appropriations panel for missile defense, praised the missile deal."

Will the U.S. ever return to a two party system of government?

Whatever happened to the former U.S. truly democratic system of government?

Where has the opposition to the dangerous Bush Republican agenda vanished to?

With nuclear stockpiles in both Russia and the U.S.A., has this Bush-Cheney-Rice Republican regime driven the entire world ever closer to a nuclear holocaust?
