Through the Looking Glass, Darkly Email Print

I’ve been thinking. Which in and of itself points up unequivocally that I am, in fact, a Democrat. I actually use the brain I was given at birth, which came factory-equipped with a kind of "filter," guaranteed to purify with conscience, common sense and logic each and every thought processed through it. Yes, I am a Democrat. If further proof is required, I offer, as well, that I am a lifelong Dodgers fan, a team which sports the purest and bluest blue of all the MLB teams.

Please note that I say this about myself with the utmost humility. That I have the capacity to use the brain I was given, I consider a gift. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience disparage those who, through no fault of their own, were born without the filter, and consequently lack the aforementioned qualities.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, for example, who is currently touting the idea that we need to wean Americans off Medicare, do away with it altogether, as well as with social security. On "Fox Business," she went so far as to say that social security was a "tremendous fraud."

Switching tacks on the same show, Bachmann revealed plans for an upcoming campaign rally, a "shindig," to be held April 7 in Minnesota, with Sarah Palin and Sean Hannity scheduled to be in attendance.

Perhaps Rush could be persuaded to join them in support of Bachmann and a platform that would have had Ayn Rand dancing for joy. Not to mention the local tea baggers.

And lest there be any doubt as to where she stands on that particular issue, only last month, Bachmann told Bill O’Reilly on "Fox Propaganda," that she believed the tea party movement was the future of the GOP.

You betcha.

She also stated that at the upcoming bipartisan health care summit, scheduled for February 25th, she expects the Democrats to pull some sort of "trick" to get what they want.

Note to the good people of Minnesota: You have a chance to do the right thing here. It’s obvious that Congresswoman Bachmann was born without the "filter." Through her actions and rhetoric, she has clearly and repeatedly demonstrated that she has no conscience and lacks the capacity for common sense and logic. So for the love of all that’s holy, when the time comes to make your voice heard, do yourself and the entire country a favor by remembering where she stands on these two extremely important issues, as well as with which faction of the GOP she is intent upon aligning herself, before you cast your vote.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader John Boehner recently weighed in on the health care summit as well. For months, on the issue of health care reform, Boehner and his fellow obstructionists have accused the Democrats of shutting them out of the process by not inviting them to the table. President Obama responded by extending yet another olive branch, inviting them to the summit, where live on television they will be given the opportunity to present their proposals for a comprehensive health care reform bill.

His response? Boehner called it a "set-up," voicing concerns about what they’ll be walking into; they won’t know, he said for instance, "how big the room is going to be."

How big the room is going to be? Really?

Note to the good people of Ohio.... (see like entry for "Minnesota" above; make appropriate modifications).

I’m in no way attempting to cast aspersions here. Honestly. Is it their fault that the filter for the brain that would have afforded them the capacity for rational thinking was missing when they were born? Or that they must soldier on without this necessary piece of equipment that would have by default added a conscience, common sense and logic, perhaps even, dare I say, personal integrity, to their makeup?

I’m merely proffering the evidence in these particular cases. I’m not going to generalize and say that everyone on the right side of the aisle is like this. There may be one or two who really do have a conscience, use at least some modicum of common sense and logic, and actually strive to work in the best interests of their constituency.

Unfortunately, at the moment, no one comes to mind. And I’ve been thinking.
