Al Gore Still Matters? You Bet He Does Email Print

Recent events have given Al Gore's detractors a chance to declare open season on not only his reputation but the very science behind global warming. I think they are all in for a rude awakening on both counts.

For Left, Al Gore Still Matters

My comments in response to this article:

I see Mr. Gore's tenacity as a great tribute to this Earth. Just think of all of the years he was misrepresented and maligned in the media. All of the times his books were trashed, misunderstood, and ignored. All of the times his warnings were unheeded. And of course, the treachery of the 2000 usurpation. And yet, he has managed in his own graceful way to get beyond it all to a place where he is more than a statesman. It can't have been easy to have your dreams ripped out from your arms. It can't have been easy to be out here screaming at the top of your lungs while everyone was walking with their fingers in their ears going lalalalalalala. I think it takes a person of great spiritual peace and strength to be able to do what he has been able to do, especially in light of the current media atmosphere and what he is dealing with on a personal level.

And that is simply because the truth of the matter is, none of it is as important as the events we are already seeing play out in front of our eyes regarding our Earth. Since the 1970s Mr. Gore has been one of the most impassioned voices out here warning us of the looming environmental catastrophe to come if we do not take it seriously and work to decrease our use of fossil fuels and change the behaviors exacerbating that catastrophe.

Since then presidents and Congresses have come and gone while we still wait for politics to catch up to the moral imperative of this crossroad we as a civilization are on. Yet, he has remained a constant and steady barometer on this issue in a sea of political rancor and public ignorance and skepticism.

And while I too have made some comments in disagreement with some views he has expressed, namely cap and trade at this time and actually my observations that environmental groups on the whole need to get more aggressive in holding politicians on all sides accountable for inaction, my heart (which makes no distinction between left, right, or otherwise regarding the future of this planet) is with him.

After all of the maligning, the media bias and condemnation of him politically and personally and the politically partisan hate spewed, he still shines through it because truth and reality can never be dimmed by those seeking to keep it hidden. And that is the key to the hate displayed on Internet web sites, FOX NEWS, and other venues towards him. They hate his focus, determination, passion, conviction, and mainly because he is right about this and because he knows that solving this crisis is more important than bringing himself down to their level.

So as we head into the future he and all those who work to make this world a better place will more than matter, we will be the shapers of that future and that focus, determination, passion and conviction will be what saves us. Not the tabloids, or the haters, or those simply too closeminded and politically partisan to open their eyes.
